Pantone has chosen it’s 19-4052 Classic Blue as Colour of the Year. They have opted for a hue to instil calm and confidence. Describing it as a colour evocative of the sky at dusk.
"It's a colour that anticipates what's going to happen next," said Laurie Pressman, the vice president of the Pantone Colour Institute, which selects the Colour of the Year. PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue brings a sense of peace and tranquility to the human spirit, offering refuge. Aiding concentration and bringing laser like clarity, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue re-centres our thoughts and fosters resilience.
Given the tumultuous year 2020 has turned out to be, Pantone couldn't have chosen a better colour to act as a calming backdrop.
Interestingly the dominant narrative for Colour of the Year from other companies has been green. Green reassures us at a primal level and speaks of optimism and is intuitively associated with regrowth and rebirth. Dulux Colour of the Year 2020 is Tranquil Dawn, a soft green hue, chosen to "reflect a growing desire to understand what it is to be human, at a time when advances in technology are making us feel increasingly disconnected from each other." Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director, Dulux UK commented, "A new decade heralds a new dawn and the hazy pale green tones of Tranquil Dawn are calming and comforting just when we need it most in our lives." Never a truer word was said.
