  • Oil on Board by George Charlton (British artist, 1899-1979).  Most likely painted between 1938 and 1946 when Charlton was evacuated to Oxford with the Slade School of Fine Art where he was tutoring.  Some of his best oil and water colour landscapes came from this period. His favourite place to paint was at nearby Leonard Stanley in Gloucestershire which is most likely depicted in this painting.

    About the artist:

    George Charlton was born on 18th February 1899 in London. 
    His parents were badger hair merchants in the city.  He was educated at London Grammar School for boys and in 1914 he won a scholarship to study Art at the Slade School of Fine Art.

    From 1919 until his retirement, George Charlton worked part time as a tutor at the Slade School in London.
