This delightful Victorian chess table combines decorative appeal with practical function. Dating from the late nineteenth century, it features a parquetry chessboard inset within the top, above a single drawer designed for storing gaming pieces.

The table stands on a beautifully turned barley-twist column, supported by an elegant carved tripod base. The timber has acquired a rich, warm colour and attractive surface patina over generations of use.

What particularly appeals is its honest wear. The top shows the rich patina of many decades of enjoyment, giving the piece the sort of character antiques lovers and interior designers increasingly seek.
