A wonderfully evocative English Regency open rocking chair, dating to circa 1820. Constructed primarily from beech and retaining its exceptional original painted finish, the chair was hand-decorated and faux-grained to simulate rich, exotic rosewood - a quintessential technique of the late Georgian and Regency eras.
The top cresting rail is adorned with delicate hand-painted polychrome decoration in cream and soft ochre tones, depicting a central rosette flanked by classical cornucopia and anthemion motifs framed within a line-strung border. Below, the backrest features double horizontal rails framing fine turned faux-bamboo vertical spindles. Softly curved, swept armrests descend into turned front supports, resting upon original timber rockers.
The seat retains its original woven rush in a rich, warm tone. A highly charming piece of English vernacular furniture that brings historical texture, authentic folk patina, and quiet elegance to modern or traditional interiors alike. Perfect in a fireside nook, nursery, or bedroom corner.
Condition Report: Offered in completely authentic, unrestored original condition with exceptional historic patina. The hand-painted faux-rosewood finish and cream top-rail motifs display light rubbing, and authentic wear consistent with 200 years of use. The original rush seat remains intact, and fully functional. There is slight, age-appropriate minor movement in the timber frame joints, but the chair remains structurally sound and rocks as intended.
