Fine Oil Portrait of a Regency Gentleman

£1,250.00Price
  • An exceptionally handsome and finely executed late 18th / early 19th century original oil on canvas portrait of a gentleman, dating to circa 1800.

Unsigned but painted with remarkable skill, the portrait captures a striking, aristocratic sitter possessing an intense, romantic 'Byronic' gaze. The artist's ability is particularly evident in the luminous handling of the flesh tones and the superb, crisp definition of the intricate white lace cravat cascading over a rich cream and gold waistcoat. The deep navy or black coat is adorned with a series of highly distinct, custom gilded brass or gold-plated scallop shell buttons - a luxury detail that points to a gentleman of significant social standing and means.

Condition: The painting has recently undergone a sensitive surface clean. This professional revival has beautifully restored the painting's vibrant colour palette and depth, leaving it in excellent, stable condition and entirely ready to hang. The canvas shows a fine, stable craquelure consistent with its 225-year age.

Provenance: The reverse of the frame retains a fascinating and multi-layered physical history of elite West London custody. It bears an authentic, old label for Pike's Chelsea Depositories, alongisde a secondary vintage storage tag from the prestigious John Barker & Co Ltd Depository in Kensington. This indicated the painting has belonged to prominent family collections throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

Presented in a later giltwood frame that perfectly compliments the Regency aesthetic.
