A fine late Georgian / Regency mahogany Wellington secretaire chest, dating from circa 1815–1825.
Antique Regency Mahogany Wellington Secretaire Chest, c.1820
A particularly charming early 19th-century mahogany Wellington-style secretaire, offering an unusually useful combination of elegant antique storage and a compact writing desk.
Behind the hinged upper section is a beautifully fitted interior with six pigeonholes, four small drawers and a red leather-lined writing surface, creating a practical workspace that can be closed away when not in use.
The interior is especially attractive, with warm figured satinwood timber to the drawer fronts and a lovely contrast between the rich mahogany, darker recesses and traditional red leather.
Below, the chest has three full-width cockbeaded drawers, retaining their decorative brass oval handles. All drawers have fine handcut dovetails and run smoothly. The exterior has acquired a wonderful warm, mellow colour and natural antique patina over the years, giving the piece plenty of character.
At only 67cm wide, this is a particularly useful size for a modern home. It would make an excellent writing desk in a study or home office, while equally at home in a bedroom, hallway or sitting room as an elegant and practical storage piece.
A lovely example of antique furniture that is as useful today as it is decorative.
