A very attractive and stylish pair of early 20th-century Chinese openwork barrel stools (or Zuo Dun / drum stools), crafted from rich auburn hardwood with inset solid burr wood top panels.
Fine Pair of Chinese Hardwood & Burr Wood Barrel Stools
A handsome pair of Chinese hardwood barrel stools of traditional drum form, dating from the early 20th century. Beautifully made, they feature finely figured solid burr wood inset tops within a solid hardwood frame, the warm tones of the timber complimented by a rich polished finish.
The stools are distinguished by their elegant openwork design, with flowing curved supports and oval piercings that create a sculptural, architectural appearance. Their robust construction and compact proportions make them exceptionally versatile, serving equally well as occasional seating, side tables, lamp stands or decorative accent pieces.
Crafted from solid hardwood with carefully mitred construction throughout, they display a pleasing combination of quality craftsmanship and restrained design. The solid burr wood tops provide an attractive contrast to the surrounding timber and add a subtle decorative element without detracting from the clean lines of the form.
Presented in very good vintage condition, the pair have only light surface wear commensurate with age and use and retain an attractive, well-maintained patina.
A stylish and practical pair that would compliment both contemporary and traditional interiors, particularly those with an interest in Asian or modern decorative design.
