Horses Running in a Landscape with Steam Locomotive - Oil onCanvas

£1,400.00Price
  • A charming and unusual Victorian oil on canvas by the English painter Edward Priestley (1820–1880), depicting three horses galloping across open pasture with an early steam locomotive and carriage passing in the distance.

The composition beautifully captures the contrast between traditional rural life and the advancing technology of the Industrial Revolution, with the powerful movement of the horses echoed by the steam train beyond. Priestley was known for his picturesque landscapes and animal subjects, and this work is an excellent example of his ability to combine landscape, sporting, and narrative elements within a single composition.

The painting is signed to the lower right and is presented in an attractive gilt frame. The warm palette, atmospheric landscape and unusual railway detail make this a particularly decorative and engaging example of the artist's work.

Edward Priestley exhibited a fondness for rural and sporting subjects throughout his career, and paintings featuring horses remain among the most sought-after of his compositions. The inclusion of the early locomotive adds an extra layer of historical interest and broadens the appeal of the piece to collectors of railway memorabilia and Victorian industrial art.

Presented in good antique condition with age-related surface wear and craquelure consistent with a Victorian oil painting. There is an historic bridging repair to the reverse to stabilise a small puncture. The repair is completely secure and the painting is sound, stable and ready to hang.
