Oil on board Landscape (No. 1) by George Charlton
George Charlton was born on 18th February 1899 in London, EC2.
His parents were badger hair merchants in the city. He was educated at London Grammar School for boys and in 1914 he won a scholarship to study Art at the Slade School of Fine Art.From 1919 until his retirement George Charlton worked part time as a tutor at the Slade School in London. This painting is dated 1938-1946 when Charlton was based in Oxford (following Slade School's evacuation there). During this period he spent much time at Leonard Stanley in Gloucestershire which was one of his favourite places to paint. Some of his best paintings, both oil and watercolours, were done here.
In 1929 he married Daphne, a student at the Slade and they later moved to New End Square in Hampstead, where he lived until his death in 1979.
This is one of a really super pair of original British Landscapes by a well known artist; beautifully framed and ready to hang in your home.
